But if you can sell fans on a good backstory - - a simmering rivalry between the fighters perhaps, or an up- from- the- bootstraps tale, maybe a struggle to overcome outside- the- ring adversity - - you've got more than just a fight. You've got genuine drama. The same goes for boxing movies, and if nothing else . Without it, director Phillipe Falardeau's film would be a fairly unremarkable, fairly familiar ride, telling the tale of a big- hearted but undisciplined palooka whose biggest hurdle in life is his own bad judgment. But with it - - and with yet another fine performance from Liev Schreiber in the title role - - it scraps its way to respectability, even if it doesn't solidly land every punch.

In a way, that's fitting. That's because the Chuck in the title is Chuck Wepner, a New Jersey brawler who - - given the nickname . His story would also ultimately serve as the real- life inspiration for a little boxing film called . Nobody gave him much of a chance of lasting more than two or three rounds against the clearly superior Ali. But Wepner stunned the boxing world by falling just 1. By the end of it, Wepner had been brutalized. His nose had been broken.

Both of his eyes had been swollen shut. But the undeniable grit of this Great White Nope captured the imagination of fight fans. It also captured the imagination of Sylvester Stallone, who, after watching the Wepner- Ali fight, was moved to write the screenplay for his Oscar- winning, career- making 1.

Schreiber recognized that, which is why, in addition to starring as Wepner, he signed on to help produce director Falardeau's film, which consistently displays spot- on 1. As with everything in which he appears, Schreiber is one of the best things about the movie. His Chuck is an infuriatingly self- destructive lifetime loser; on paper, he wouldn't appear to be the kind of guy for whom audiences would want to root. But Schreiber finds something in him - - a spark of charisma, an underdog's spirit, a touch of the Everyman - - that makes him more than just sympathetic. The big knucklehead is downright likeable.
